Since this letter is all about what I expected of you, brace yourself for expectations from your younger self.

In terms of career, I wonder what sort of career that you are doing. Did you pursue a career related to HR ? If not, I hope that you will enjoy your work and always be good with people you are working with. I hope you earn enough money so that you can travel to a lot of different countries as you dream to explore the world during your young age. Please choose your career well as you probably do not want to regret your choices later.

For health, I hope you are healthy and still maintain slim as you are now. Please take care of your own body and live a healthy lifestyle. Eat a lot of vegetables and also fruits. Oh, one more thing, please remember to take a good care of your mental health as well. It is really important and do keep your anger issue in check. I hope that you’re not a smoker nor an alcoholic. Do not stress yourself by caring too much on someone that does not appreciate your presence. Live a happy life and make sure to put yourself as your priorities. You have gone thru a lot during you adolescent period and you surely did learn from it.

For the role part, I will portrays a lot of roles. I believe that at this age,you are a daughter, a mother to your children and also a worker.  I hope you can handle this roles as it can be stressful having to take care of the family and work at the same time. I will make sure that you can. As a mother, I hope that you give your kids the best learning experience and you can spare some of your times with them. As a daughter,  take a good care of your parents the way they did as now and as a wife, I hope that you can be a good help to your husband and to support him all the time. For the present family, I hope that it is not much of differences from the family I have now. I hope you can love your children as much as how your parents love you now.

Here comes the personal topic part. Look, I really, really hope that you accepted the fact that everyone leaves one day. People come and go and it is your job to create a beautiful and amazing memories with them. You are lucky enough to live a good life in a happy family. I expected that you will be more religious than I am now.

To my future self, I hope all the things that I have mentioned above are true, even though I do not know what will happen, but I will pray for the best. Live a healthy and happy life and always be grateful for everything you have.

Sincere,

Me

ACTIVITY 6: MY LIFE AS A YOUNG ADULT

GBR BIE

INTRODUCTION

My name is Elfira Anak Kiriti and I am 20 years old. I was born on 28th February 1998 at Kapit Hospital. I am a girl. As for my family, we have 4 members which are my dad, my mom, and my older sister. My father is a teacher and my mother work as operation assistant in school. My father is Bidayuh and my mother is an Iban. We mostly conversing in my mother dialect at home. I attended SK Lepong Gaat when I was in primary one(2005-2006) and moved to SK Nanga Balang when I was in primary two(2006-2010) and then, I went to Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching. After leaving high school, I continued with pre-university in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, taking Foundation in Life Sciences. Currently I am taking Degree in Human Resource Development in UNIMAS. My life goals are to be successful in everything I do in life and making my family proud of me. My motto is “Do my best so that I cannot blame myself for anything”.

MILESTONE

Physical Development

For physical, I am considering myself to be in a good shape in terms of health and my body movement. My Body Mass Index is in a normal range even though I might look a little smaller than peers in my age. I started to jog this year as I stopped involving myself in playing netball. I was once a netball player when I was in high school and continue playing netball during my foundation. I gain a lot of stamina when playing netball but since I stopped doing that, I need to improve my stamina by doing some exercises such as jogging and working out. I love going out and interact with nature and because of that, I started to go for a hike during my free time. I sometimes feel a little bit weak as I always sleep late during night and my eating pattern also not stable as I always skip breakfast because I woke up late every morning but I did try to not skip my breakfast as often as I can.

Cognitive development

In term of cognitive, I am considered as an adult, and my parents allow me to make a decision on my own. Being away from a family has taught me a lot of thing by being independent and I need to make a decision by myself but there are some things that I have to ask for a help from my parents. For instance, dealing with stress, I know people are not always there to help you coping with your problems as they are also going through some rough journey in their life so, to help myself relieve stress, I will go out and have my “me time” to reflect on myself and to give myself a break from my studies. I once failing in my exam and that has made me a wiser person as I am now as I know my priorities.

Psychosocial Development

As for psychosocial development, I found myself being more closer to my parents as we only meet during school holiday and I have to use that little time having fun with them. I learned to appreciate each and every members of my family. As for friends, I meet some people who come from different walks of life and places. This resulted in my change of perspective toward people and understanding the way they view things. This is a welcoming change for me. But I also kept my boundaries with friends, both old and new ones, just enough for them and I to still feel comfortable with each other even though I don’t really reveal too much personal facts about me. As for love, I am not interested in that romantic relationship yet but surely, the feelings are there but crushes come and go. I prefer to value my relationship with my family and friends, and stay loyal to them instead. It is better for me to chase success while maintaining a good relationship with my family and friends.

REFLECTION

I was still in my adolescence stage when I entered University. According to Erikson’s theory in this stage, young people are expected to develop their sexual identity. This is gained through the discovery of oneself and in the course of finding meaning to their personhood. They may also experience identity crisis as a result of the transition from childhood to adulthood. Some adolescents may feel confused and are unsure whether an activity is age-appropriate for them. Crisis at this stage may also be brought about by expectations from themselves and from people around them. I am thankful that I was brought up to always stand firm in my decisions. Being in University is tough, but when you are strong, especially if you succeed in this stage, you can survive it.

The next stage of Erikson’s stages of psychosocial is intimacy vs isolation. This stage is affected by the stage before it. Once we have stronger sense of identity, we are ready to share our life with other people. However, as I just entered this period of life, I have yet to feel that way. I am not ready to be intimate with other people but I believe that when the time comes, I will achieve this stage as well. For now, it is only unspoken feelings that are being developed.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, everybody have their own milestones story, development in cognitive, psychosocial and physical. Being an adult is tough and there are a lot to be explored and learned in this world. It is different for everyone and the way they cope is the best way for their own problem solving. From the case study, I realised that I have developed well in term of physical, cognitive and psychosocial despite still having trust issue with everyone around me.

ACTIVITY 5: Identity Crisis in Popular Media

140313171146-mean-girls-movie-still-horizontal-large-gallery

The movie that I chose for this activity is Mean Girls. The main character for this movie is Cady Heron. Cady Heron was a teenage girl who had been home-schooled while she was in Africa. Her parents are both scientists and they moved to suburbs of Illinois. After moving, Cady finally gets to experienced public school life for the first time. She finally gets to make friend to Janis and Damien on her second day of school. It was during the lunch time, Regina George defended Cady from being harassed by Jason, a known pervert of the school. Regina and her two other sidekicks, Karen Smith and Gretchen Weiners decided to include Cady in their clique because of her look. Their group is being called as The Plastics. When Janis saw that Cady was included in the clique, she planned to get a revenge on Regina by having Cady to destroyed the group. Cady developed a crush on Aaron Samuels which was Regina’s ex boyfriend. When Cady told Gretchen that she has a feelings towards Aaron, Gretchen explains to her that as he is Regina’s ex, he is completely off-limits, which she called the rule as “the rule of feminism”. Regina found out that Cady has a feelings towards Aaron and decided to  rekindle their relationship. Cady decided to win Aaron’s heart by pretending that she’s not good in Math so that Aaron can help in tutoring her. In a tutor session, Cady tells Aaron that Regina was cheating, which caused them to break up again. Cady also gave Regina a weight-gain bars and trick her by saying that it was a weight loss bar. She also told Gretchen about Regina does not really like Gretchen and out of anger, Gretchen ended up telling Karen that Regina called her slut. This situation results in Regina get kicked out from the clique. One day, Cady was having a party and invited a small group of people but ended up there were so many people coming. This is when Cady and Aaron get caught by Regina and Regina started to write a bad thing about herself in a book called the Burn Book  and leaks the book that is full of secrets and gossips about students and the faculty members, making it seem like the book belongs to Cady, Gretchen and Karen. The contents of the book  causes chaos in the school, that Principal Duvall made all junior girls to gather in the auditorium and asked Miss Norbury to talk to the girls. Miss Norbury told the girls to apologies to each other after making such ruckus in the school. When it was Janis turn to apologies, Regina storms out after Janis confessed that she was the mastermind of Regina’s downfall. Cady followed Regina outside and trying to explain the situation to her and Regina ended up getting hit by bus which people make rumors that Cady pushed Regina. Most of the students in the school dislike Cady and she has no friends and her parents were upset in her. Cady finally realized her mistakes and took a full responsibilities on the Burn Book and went to apologies everyone that she drag into the situation. She is voted as a Spring Fling Queen at the annual Spring Fling Dance and gave a very touching speech in which she declares her victory is meaningless as everyone is wonderful in their own way. She then breaks her victory tiara into pieces and gives it out to all the contestants to show that victory belongs to all of them. The movie ended with disbandment of The Plastics. Cady mended her friendship with Janis and Damien, who have forgiven her.

In the movie, we can see that Cady is struggling as she had yet to find her true identity. In this stage also, adolescents will also try on many different selves to see which ones fit. We can relate the Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development, the identity versus role confusion stage, with the movie. Adolescents struggled with questions like “Who am I?” and “What do I do in my life?”. Cady is exactly like that as she started off with being innocent and decided to change herself to fit in with The Plastics, which is not working. But in the end, she found her true identity and stick to that.

James Marcia created four statuses of identity, which are Identity diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, identity achievement. In the beginning, Cady is in the identity moratorium status. She found herself in the centre of a crisis when she first enter high school. Her crisis begins when she searched for where she belongs within the social cliques of the school, and it climaxed when the Burn Book incident happened. It got worse when she admitted about her involvement in the Burn Book. This resulted her losing her friends.  Towards the end of the movie, Cady is in the identity achievement status. She had gone through the identity crisis and had made a commitment to the role of her identity. She joined the Mathletes and had an epiphany about true identity during the state finals.

As for the sexual behavior, Cady becomes one of the Plastics and decided to fail purposely in her math test as she has a feeling toward Aaron Samuels. By this action, she can get close to Aaron by asking him to be her tutor. She suffered the consequences of having most of the school population hate her, and a parents that are disappointed in her.

As for Cady’s relationships with her parents, they are very close in the beginning of the movie. After she went through some troubles at school, her parents decided to ground her. Despite all of that, her parents still treat her with respect. When they found out that Cady is failing her math, they did not yell at her and expressed their disappointment in a mature way.

Friendship plays an important role in the movie. Cady befriended Janis and Damien, and they accepted her for who she is. But when Cady becomes The Plastics, she had to abide to the clique’s rules. The Plastics seems nice to her and treated her like a sister but they are merciless in order to maintain their status as the most popular clique in high school by kicking out whoever did not abide their rules. Cady made a bad decision when she agreed to Janis’ plan to ruin Regina by hanging out with The Plastics. Because of her actions, she got into trouble.

All in all, this movie showed that adolescence is filled with self-discovery and it is important for us to understand ourselves by making ourselves as priorities and have a strong sense of identity.

ACTIVITY 4: AN INTERGENERATIONAL DIALOGUE

For this activity, I was asked to do an interview with a child. I interviewed 7 years old kid named Widad. The interview I had with him was very fun even though he was a bit sick during that time. During the interview, I can see that Widad is a very bright boy as he did not feel awkward even though it was our first time meeting each other. Kids at this age are very active and love to play outdoor activities a lot. I can see that Widad loves to play a lot as he kept mentioning about playing when I asked him about thing he likes to do. When I asked him to describe the best thing about him, he was a bit confused and told me about his best friends. Perhaps, he did not fully understand my question or he wrongly interpret the meaning of my question. I had so much fun with him and glad that he agreed to help me.

ACTIVITY 3: PRESCHOOL OBSERVATIONS

For this activity, I was assigned to conduct a play session with children at the age range of 3-6 years old to observe the children with the three dimensions which are physical, cognitive and psychological as they play some games. Two children were involved in this test. For the first child, her name is Anis Zahra Batriesya binti Kamri and she is 6 years old. She was born at Sarawak General Hospital at 5th October 2012. For the second child, his name is Ahmad Daniel bin Kamri and he is 4 years old.  Both of them are siblings and their parents are both teachers. They attended Kampung Tambirat Preschool which is located in Samarahan.

OBSERVATION

There are few tests that have been conducted on each kid to study their development on the 3 aspects; cognitive, physical and psychosocial.

The first test was conducted to test their development in psychosocial. During the test, they were both given ice cream. Batriesya got a chocolate flavoured ice cream while Daniel got vanilla ice cream. When we wanted to test Batriesya’s ice cream, she willingly to share her ice cream and as for Daniel, he avoided Batriesya when she wanted to taste the ice cream. As they were enjoying the ice cream, they spilled some of it on the floor and quickly ran to the kitchen to get a towel and wipe the spilled ice cream on the floor.

For the second activity, we tested on their development in cognitive. We gave them two types of games which are Pop-Up Barrel and Jenga. The first test was playing Pop-Up Barrel. This game is a popular luck-based game for children manufactured by Tomy. This game originated in Japan in 1975 under the name Kurohige Kiki Ippatsu. As they already know the rules of the game, they did not hesitate to play the game. They were very enthusiastic while playing the game. They took turn in inserting the swords into the slots. The second game was playing Jenga. Daniel was the first to grab the blocks and started to play the game while Batriesya started late as she did not understand how to play the game. She arranged the blocks differently. However, she managed to play it correctly after taking some times to observe her brother.

For the physical development, we did chicken dance and also dancing to baby shark song. Daniel did not want to join us dancing even though we promised to give him treat after dancing. At first, Batriesya was a bit shy but after we dance along with her, she seems to enjoy the dance. She managed to dance according to the speed of the songs.

ANALYSIS

Based on the games that have been carried out towards those two children, we could see some ideas and how it results that way. For the cognitive aspect, they were playing two type of games mentioned in the observation. By looking at how they play the games, they obviously more familiar with the Pop-Up Pirate game as they have seen one variety show, Running Man where people in Running Man often playing the game. In this situation, it shows that they have a very good procedural memory.

For the psychosocial test, we use the aptitude test. It was a test to see the individual’s abilities to perform a specific task of different situations. During the test, we purposely gave them ice cream to see how they react if the ice cream melted and spilled on the floor. They seemed very good at handling the situation as they hurriedly ran to the kitchen to take wet towel and wipe the melted ice cream on the floor without being instructed to do so.

Lastly for the physical test, they were asked to dance to a few songs. However, Daniel was not interested to join the dance and ran to his room while Batriesya dance happily. Batriesya has developed a great gross motor skill. She moved a lot while dancing to the songs.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this task helps me to understand better about the three aspects of development which are psychosocial, physical, and cognitive. Both of the kids participated well in all the conducted activities and they are still developing physically, psychosocially and cognitively. Due to their age gap, their development are slightly different from each other. However, they both can handle every situation very well.

Activity 2: Documentary Analysis of Babies

download (1)

The documentary babies shows the life of four babies from different part of the world, Ponijao from Namibia, Bayarjargal from Mongolia, Mari from Tokyo, Japan, and Hattie from San Fransisco, USA. This movie has no narration and shows us the contrast in term of culture and how they were being raised. In this report, I will be covering about babies’ development in three aspects which are physical, cognitive, and psychosocial.

As observed from the video, the two babies Ponijao and Bayarjargal came from a poor background and the other two Hattie and Mari came from part of the world that can be considered as well-off. Since they live in different environment, they develop differently from each other.

Physical Development

Physical development provides children with the abilities they need to explore and interact with the world around them. (physical development in babies and children, 2017). Ponijao and Bayarjargal were left to explore the environment by themselves. As they were brought up in a poor parts of the world, they don’t have toys to engage themselves with compared to Mari and Hattie.  As we can observed from the video, Ponijao cried when being hit by the other baby and this shows that they can sense pain at this age. Hattie and Bayar also cried when they fell as they can feel the pain. The babies’ motor skills are developed in the documentary, their gross motor skill included. Bayarjargal had a harder time figuring out how to stroll as he attempted to keep his balance while Ponjiao struggle less than Bayarjargal. This is because as soon as she was born, her mom would put her in her mother’s lap without covering her in some cloth. As for Bayarjargal, he was different because after he was born, he was swaddled tightly in a cloth, this affects his physical development which is why he is the slowest baby who can walk. The developing fine motor skill can be shown by Mari and Hattie. They use their skill to pick up the toys. Hattie, when she tried to peel the banana with her tiny fingers which shows that she can control her hand very well.

Psychosocial Development

Psychosocial development is where emotional, moral, social, and personality development of human beings are being studied. In this section, we will stress the part on how the babies respond to certain circumstances and how the babies’ relationship with others. Ponijao interacted with her surrounding very well as she lives in rural area where everyone grew up together. In one part, she encounter sibling rivalry when her sibling took away a jug from her which brought her crying. For Bayarjargal, he also lives in rural area but is parents do not interact with him much. The only person he interacted with is his brother but his brother is a bit aggressive that sometimes make Bayarjargal cries which showed his emotion of anger and upset. Hattie and Mari attended a class to help in their social skills. However, Hattie seems to not enjoying the class as she walked away from the group. This shows that emotions are developed during infancy.

Cognitive Development

For the last part, we will cover the cognitive development area. In this documentary, babies interact with different environment and society. Hattie and Mari grow up in big cities where they have a lot of toys to keep them company. Ponijao and Bayarjargal interacted with the nature mostly. They play with the sticks, animals, and stones. They both share one thing in common which is curiosity in exploring things around them. In the documentary, the babies start their language development like others babies around the world which are crying, babbling, mumbling and cooing. Ponijao, Mari and Hattie surrounded by the people that speak their native languages. However, Bayarjargal spent his time lying around by himself alone. He is a bit slower in babbling compare to other babies as his mother spent less time interacting with him. This situation shows that it is important for the parents to interact with their babies to help their language development.

To wrap things up, despite the fact that the ways of life are unique, babies experienced the same thing during their growing up processes. Some babies might developed slower than others and this shows that their surrounding might be the factor of the variation. It is also important to interact with children and let them explore their world.

Activity 1: ‘Countdown to Life: The Extraordinary Making of You’

download

THE FIRST 8 WEEKS

The first scene shows a young brave man named Bruno crossing ravine 850 meters above sea level on a rope that is 2.5 cm thick. We might be wondering about how he can balance himself on such a tiny rope without being scared. This has been answered at the end of the video which explains the vestibular system plays a major role in keeping Bruno upright. By the 8th week, a maze of looping tunnel is carved out and filled with fluid to form the inner ear which will give a sense of balance.

In this video, it shows that eight crucial and perilous week from the moment of conception to the assembly of vital organs and formation of human body. For the first story, the documentary documented four quadruplets sisters, Holly, Jessica, Elly, and Georgie. This process starts with the meeting of a single sperm cell and a single egg cell that will produce one human but in their case, it is incredibly rare. Hundreds of cells formed at day 5 that supposed to be creating a single human but there were a vital communication broke down among the cells and it created distinct clumps of cell to begin to behave independently from each other. The result is four identical sisters.

bfb1ICWL_400x400.jpg

In the second story, we can see a 90-year old bright and spry man, Mr.Kamatura lived a long healthy life. The reasons why he is still living up to this day was because of what happened inside his mother’s womb. In the 8th day after conception, the changes of our body determine the longevity of life. In this part too, baby Nuha was born during wet season. The seasons determine the food that the mother will consume during the pregnancy and it will affects the baby. A study by Britain’s Medical Research Council shows that those who were conceived in the dry season, they are seven times more likely to die in young adulthood than those who were conceived in the wet season. During wet season, there are fewer calories but more leafy, green vegetables. Leafy, green vegetable provide chemical that binds to the strand of DNA and this will change how some of our genes work. Those who are born in the dry season have key gene that is overactive, which is less able to fight infection. This specify the phrase “you are what your mother eat”.

Around day 15, the cells begin to transform into 400 different cells. There are three layers which are bottom layer, middle layer and top layer. The bottom layer will form our guts and liver, the middle forms the kidney, muscle, bones, and blood, and the top layer, forms the skin, hair, teeth, and brain. Melanie Gaydos is an international model that has a genetic condition called ectodermal dysplasia. In her case, the top layer in her body did not develop as expected which makes her hair grow inward and her skin sensitive. The changes in her TP63 gene causes her striking appearances.

On the 18th day, there are thousands of cells now and at this part of the moment, the growth gene switches on. We will inherited genes from our parents. However, in Nell’s cases, she inherited two of her father’s genes which makes her a bit taller for her age. The growth hormone is called IGF-2. This leads to greater risk of developing cancer but fortunately, she is healthy and her kidneys size are normal.

Around day 19th, our organ should be assembled and it is necessary for our organs to end up at the right place. As for Randy Foye, his heart is at the right side instead of at the left side. This happens because the cilia that determine the layout of our internal organ did not spin. This case might cause fatal but he is lucky.

After 21 days, the embryo that looks like a flat disk will begin to fold and create a tube. During the scan, Hannah and Adam’s baby, Amelia has some issues with the heart. The aorta is too narrow and blood could not get through and their baby has to undergo a surgery quickly after the birth. The doctor removed the narrow that causes the problem from the baby’s heart and she is doing fine until now.

After the 38th days, the cells within 2 flattened paddles at the end of each limb slowly die away. In the Da Silva family, 14 out of 23 of their family members most likely having six fingers instead of five fingers. This happened because a protein named sonic-hedgehog. When there is too much sonic hedgehog, six fingers will be produced.

AGAINST THE ODDS

In this episode, it mainly talks about the middle of 16 weeks. This episode started with a young flight attendance, Cheryl. She is one of a tiny handful of people who was born without fingerprints. Cheryl only has just a few small creases on the end of her fingers. This is called as Immigration Delay Disease.

At the 8th week, we all inherit genes that instruct our bodies to make us as male or female. There will be release of critical hormone, testosterone and the baby will grow a penis. As for Johnny, Gaudeline and Carla, their bodies did not produce the kind of testosterone needed to form male genitals but, as soon as they hit puberty, they will get another surge of testosterone that will help them to grow a penis. These people are called ‘Guevedoce’.

gueverdoce

Around week 8, our face was formed. Genes that created face switched on and off at different time and this explain why we look different from each other. When we were just the size of an apple pip during week 4, the genes that we inherited from our ancestors created a gill-like structure call the pharyngeal arches, that will become parts of the ear, jaw and the throat. Oliver was born with cleft lip. There is no family history and his cleft lip was considered as random genetic mutation. This possibly happened if there is an interruption during the assembly of the complex part of his face. His top lip then was realigned by Dr. Felicity.

maxresdefault.jpg

On the 11th week, the nervous system learn to control our body which means that we started to move our hands and legs. We tend to favor one hand over the other. 90% of our populations are right-handed and other 10% are left-handed. It runs in the family so we can say it has got something to do with our genes. The disadvantages of the left-handed people is that they are slightly shorter and more prone to migraines and dyslexia. Tom Stalker is a left-handed person and a medal winning boxer. Natural selection favors traits that are beneficial to those which are not.

Skin colour that distinguishes us human comes in different wide spectrum of tones. At the 13th week, the baby skin colour is created. At first, the foundations for baby skin colour are not laid until week 13 which makes the baby is transparent but then, the swarm of cells called melanocytes spread and released pigments called melanin. This skin colour helps people in a hot region reduce a risk of getting skin cancer and protecting skin. Nassoro Kasim is an albino and his body unable to make melanin. He will get blister if staying too long under the sun. As for him, nothing can stop his passion in football. He and his other albino friends will wait until the sun set so that they can play football without hurting their skin.

Immune system become fully active during week 14, and getting ready for life after the birth immune system. Joanne Chapman, or Jo, had an aggressive form of blood cancer and needed a bone marrow transplant. Human Leukocytes Antigen system detect traces of virus and destroy the virus outside of the cells. Fortunately, she found a match of bone marrow of 22 years old guy that almost matched her perfectly. Our immune system is different from each other. According to some studies, it depends on who you find attractive. In the rating of sexiness based on smell of the shirt experiment, the girl choose the man with different type of immune system than her immune system. This study show that the immune system might has influence on who you found attractive.

Around week 15, the cerebral hemisphere has all the brain cells they ever need. The mind can be affected by our culture, parents or the book you have read. Laird Hamilton is a risk taker. He is a wave surfer. By the 15th week, testosterone is released and the surge happened to coincides with the time when parts of the brain that formed personality are being organised. This will determine how thrill-seeking we are. Other than that, people with high testosterone have a longer ring finger compared to their index finger. It is also stated that our gender does not match our genitals.  Mattie is a girl in boy’s body. This happened because the testosterone in her body made her body male but it did not reach the brain and that is why Mattie feels female.

During the 23 weeks in the womb, our body starts to pile on significantly amount of fat. Fat provides energy that muscles needed after we are born. There was a mysterious disease on the Faroe Island that silently killed the people in that place. Dr. Jan Rasmussen discovered a remarkable discovery. He found out that in the muscle of the heart, there exist a component called carnitine, which unlocks the energy and without this component, the heart will have a risk of stopping. We received carnitine from our mother when we were in her womb but as we were born, the carnitine is from our diet. Majken was able to survive after being injected by the carnitine and she was diagnosed with Carnitine Transporter Disease (CTD).

THE FINAL PUSH

In this last episode, it shows the final weeks of development of the baby in the womb from week 24 to 40. At week 25, the largest bone was formed, the pelvis. A 9-year-old Janelly was born without the ability to make bones. She is not gaining any weight during 3 to 4 weeks after she was born. Her mother realised something was not right about her daughter. Our bones formed by special cells called osteoblasts. It replaced the soft cartilage with hard calcium based mineral, throughout this process, there will be damaging chemical that stop the bone from hardening. In order to neutralise these damaging chemicals, the body created protein TNSALP. In Janelly case, her supple cartilage never turned to strong bone. Dr. Jill Simmons has treated Janelly for seven years and tried a new drug which will replaced missing protein that body cannot produce. After six months, she started developing real bones.

At week 27, the brain is already extremely active. The cells transform into wonderful complex structure reaching out to connect each other. At this time, the fatty sheaves are wrapped around the brain cells, and insulating them. This will enable them to send signals to the brain. Joey had an incredibly amazing memory. He could remember any event from the past few years. In order to have memories, we need to form hearing senses. The hearing is the very first to develop. Cochlea is sensory organ for hearing, it is also stated that memory comes from hearing. The sound wave causes the fluid inside cochlea to move and that causes us to hear anything around us. In the 28th week, sounds coming from outside should spark the tiny hair cells to life, sending a signal to the baby’s brain. To justify this statement, Michael Mosley conducted the experiment where he played different type of toys during scanning. Upon hearing the sound of the toys, the baby reacted by covering its face as seen from the machine. There are some mothers who read a book to their babies and stopped for a while and then started to read again to their babies. Before birth, the brain can store memory. The babies have the early memories, when we read something that rhymes or the similar things we read to them, the heart rate dropped and that shows the babies might remember something they heard.

At 28 weeks, the sense of sight starting to develop. At the back of the retina, light-sensitive cells called rods and cones grow. Cone cells are being wired up getting ready to colour our world. If vital proteins malfunction, we will live in a black and white world. In Pingelap atoll, in South Pacific, the islanders are mostly colour-deficient, which 10% of the population lived in total black and white world. One of the islanders, Herrol, struggle with painful burnt-out image without his cones working in daylight. But, as sun goes down, he will gain an amazing advantage where they can see clearly in the dark. Herrol used the ability to see int the dark to catch flying fish during night time.

It is declared that the outside world is starting to shape us even in the womb. Our mother’s diet will also affect our health as we grow older. Freddie and Lal were two men who lived similar live. They do the same work and even eat the same food. The only difference is that Lal has developed a type 2 diabetic while Freddie has not. Diabetes might develop because of what the mothers eat during pregnancy or can be developed when the diet is not right. Lal was from a small village in Punjab where everyone eats food like daal, rotis and rice. The life he is in now is very contrast than the situation he was conceived in. Lal mother’s diet is low in fat and sugar and that is why the food he is eating now affects him because the high calories food are not programmed for his body while he was in the womb. Unlike Freddie, he lives in Mumbai, his mother has already eat high calories food so his body was programmed to eat food like his mother used to so that resolve why he has no diabetes.

Julie was 30th week pregnant with Vincent when there was a collapse of the civilisations in Quebec, Canada. The citizens were living under constant stress since there was no electricity for 22 days. Julie was living under constant stress during her pregnancy and the stress caused cortisol to be released into bloodstream. Her son, Vincent has problem with his language development. Professor Suzanne King conducted a test where she took swabs of DNA from children as they grew. The results were disturbing as crucial genes had been switched on and off. It is noted that the more days that the pregnant mothers spent without electricity, the bigger the effect on their unborn babies, and bigger the impact on their lives as they grow up. The greater the number of day without electricity, the lower the IQ of the child. So, stressful environment will affect our genes before we are born.

At 37 weeks, almost all of our vital organs are fully built and only breathing is yet to be developed. When we were in the womb, we started to practice breathing with the lungs. Tiny alveoli form, getting us ready for breathing. Sam, a free diver, was born six week premature so she could not develop the lungs properly. Without the proper development of lungs, we will struggle to breathe as the absorption of oxygen into the bloodstream will be quite difficult. Even though she was born six week premature, she can still hold her breath for a long time for someone who has trouble with lungs. She is the living proof of the imperfections happened in the womb does not shaped her and she can still breath like a normal people would or even better than them.

So after 38 weeks of developing things and facing some critical moment, the baby is ready. Once the baby is born, their umbilical cord must be cut off. Then, the lungs are ready for the next adventure of life.
